Protect the contents of a space from accidental deletion or modification, by taking regular, periodic snapshots.
Step by Step
- Go to the System page of the web app as a ‘System Admin’.
- Click the ‘Gear’ icon next to the space you would like to schedule snapshots for.
- Click ’Take a Snapshot’.
- Click ‘Take Recurring Snapshots’.
- Use ‘Append Additional Name to your Snapshot’ to enter a suffix for the names of snapshot created with this schedule.
- Use the ‘Expire In’ section options to select how long you would like your snapshot to remain on the node.
- Use ’Add a Name to Your Schedule’ to enter a name for the task that will show up in the scheduled tasks modal.
- Use ‘Once’, ‘Hourly, ‘Daily’, ‘Weekly’, or ‘Monthly’ to select how often you would like to take a snapshot.
- Click ‘Schedule Your Snapshot’.
- Click ’View Tasks’ to view the scheduled task for your snapshot.
After the snapshot expires, its contents will be deleted permanently.
Snapshots keep a copy of deleted files available in case you want to restore them, so the longer you keep a snapshot, and the more files you delete, the more space the snapshot will occupy.
More frequent snapshots tend to occupy more space as they save additional versions of files. On the other hand, less frequent snapshots conserve space but may result in delays when it comes to freeing up capacity. For instance, taking hourly snapshots that expire daily allows for a 24-hour window for restoring data before freeing up capacity, whereas weekly snapshots that expire monthly delay the freeing up of capacity for 30 days. By combining these schedules, more versions can be accessed in the short term while still keeping a limited backup for a longer duration, just in case. However, it is important to note that this strategy consumes more capacity.
